GAPS Code of Conduct
The GAPS community (Graduate and Postdoc Society and the community of graduate students and postdocs) strives to create an environment where everyone feels included, valued, and free to express themselves and their ideas amongst their peers at TRIUMF. Thus, GAPS members and guests at GAPS events are expected to behave in a professional manner that is welcoming to all participants and free from discrimination, harassment, or retaliation. By treating each other with respect and consideration we create a collegial, inclusive, and professional environment at TRIUMF and GAPS events wherever they are hosted. It is the responsibility of every GAPS member, at or representing TRIUMF, as well as all guests at GAPS events, to uphold the standards of behaviour outlined in this Code of Conduct and the TRIUMF Code of Conduct to create this environment conducive to scientific and social exchange.
GAPS will not tolerate inappropriate actions or statements based on individual characteristics such as but not limited to age, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, marital status, nationality, political affiliation, ability status, or educational background. Disruptive or harassing behavior of any kind is unacceptable and will result in immediate corrective action. Harassment includes, but is not limited to, inappropriate or intimidating behaviour and language, unwelcome jokes or comments, unwanted touching or attention, offensive images, photography without permission, and stalking. Keep in mind that these behaviours, even if they are subtle microaggressions, still constitute violations of this Code of Conduct. GAPS members and those attending GAPS events must also avoid any damage, misuse or theft of property.
If you have experienced or observed any behaviour that violates this Code of Conduct, please report the incident to the event organizer(s), the GAPS Committee (gaps@triumf.ca), the Early Career and Students for EDI Committee (ECS-EDI) (gaps.edi@triumf.ca) and/or the TRIUMF Ombudsperson (ombudsperson@triumf.ca). Any report of inappropriate behaviour will be treated with the utmost seriousness, following an internal Action Plan for Incident Reporting. Any person who violates this Code of Conduct will face sanctions such as but not limited to verbal warning, being asked to leave the event, and having the behaviour reported through the relevant channels in line with the TRIUMF Bullying and Harassment Policy (https://www.triumf.ca/node/41103/bullying_harrassment). Retaliation for complaints of inappropriate conduct will not be tolerated. If you experience or witness behaviour violating the Code of Conduct and direct personal intervention seems safe and appropriate to you, you should feel empowered to intervene.
Remember that the GAPS community is focused on personal, social, and professional development for its members. By acting in a respectful and considerate way toward your colleagues, you help create an inclusive and welcoming environment that allows everyone to participate in and enjoy the GAPS community and events.
