Postdoctoral research position in experimental nuclear physics

Postdoctoral research position in experimental nuclear physics at the University of Surrey.

Location: Guildford

Salary: £32,817 to £40,322 per annum - Fixed Term

Post Type: Full Time

Advert Placed: Thursday 25 February 2021

Closing Date: Friday 16 April 2021

Reference: 012121

The position will support a programme of nuclear structure, funded under a recent UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship award. The programme of work will employ Coulomb-excitation and transfer reactions, making use of high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometers and their associated ancillary devices. The position will involve work with radioactive rare isotope beams at laboratories including the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB), Argonne National Laboratory and TRIUMF. The candidate will also have the opportunity to work on detector development using novel scintillators and will be encouraged in the submission of experimental proposals.

The Experimental Nuclear Physics group at the University of Surrey undertakes research including fundamental theoretical and experimental nuclear physics, radiation physics and applications. The PDRA will join an established group studying nuclear structure phenomena and reactions pertinent to astrophysical scenarios using gamma-rays and charged-particles and performing isomeric and beta-unstable nuclei at the limits of experimental accessibility. Our research also benefits from close collaboration with the Nuclear Theory Group in Surrey.
