National Day for truth and reconciliation
The focus for this edition each year is on the history and current impacts of colonization on First Nations people in Canada. The presentation below includes resources for learning more about this important topic. We hope this can be a starting point for the TRIUMF community to engage with the process of Truth and Reconciliation and reflect on the history of the people who inhabited this land since time immemorial.
Pride Month
Every June we focus on Pride month at the ECS-EDI Community Coffee. This month celebrates everyone in the 2SLGBTQIA+ community as well as the history and ongoing fight for equality and respect for the community. Everyone is welcome to celebrate this month of joy, action and rainbows!
Women and Gender-Diverse Scientists
The focus for this coffee hour was to highlight the history and contributions of women and gender-diverse scientists as well as the struggle for equity and inclusion that persists today.
Earth Day
This edition focuses on the way our physics research impacts the environment and tries to encourage discussion on how to reduce our impact and what we can do as scientists to care for our planet.
Black History Month
Each February, people across Canada participate in Black History Month events and celebrations that honour the legacy and contributions of Black people in Canada and their communities. The ECS-EDI community coffee focuses on the history of Black folks in physics as well as local events and personal recommendations from members of ways they plan to engage with Black History Month.
Mental health and well-being
This edition focused on creating a safe space to engage with the mental health and well-being struggles we all face and raise awareness of the resources available to the TRIUMF community. The presentation provides links to a lot of resources that can help if you are in need of support.
Transgender Visibility
This edition of the community coffee hour celebrated the Transgender Day of Visibility. Observed on March 31st each year, it was created as a compliment to the already established Trans Day of Remembrance on November 20th. The TDOR is observed as a memorial to those in the community who have been lost to transphobic violence.
The Transgender Day of Visibility is a celebration of the lively, vibrant and diverse community of trans people all over the world.
Accessibility at TRIUMF
This edition focused on the accessibility (or lack thereof) on-site at TRIUMF. Highlighting where there are issues that prevent people from participating in research is important for making TRIUMF an inclusive place to work.
